All thanks to Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire goals and a tacticle play from Bruno Fernandes and Eric Bailly.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-0 in the Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United threw the race for the final Champions League qualification spots in the Premier League open by beating fourth-place Chelsea 2-0 thanks to headers by Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire on Monday.

With 12 games remaining, seven points separate Chelsea and 11th-place Burnley, with the team finishing fifth also set to earn a place in next season’s Champions League following UEFA’s decision to punish Man City for serious breaches of financial regulations by handing the English champion a two-year European ban.

Martial glanced in a header off a right-wing cross by Aaron Wan-Bissaka to give United the lead in the 45th minute at Stamford Bridge, before Maguire planted home a corner from January signing Bruno Fernandes in the 66th.

Here’s Manchester United player ratings against Chelsea

David de Gea

Was protected so well by his defence he had little to do on one of his most comfortable evenings at Chelsea. 7

Harry Maguire

Arguably fortunate not to have been sent off for a needless kick at Michy Batshuayi and made Chelsea pay with his first United goal. 7

Luke Shaw

Developing into a better centre-back than a left-back. Read the game well and supplemented the specialist centre halves well. 8

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Was quiet and nigh-on anonymous in the final third until he left Willian with twisted blood and crossed for Anthony Martial. 7

Brandon Williams

Got forward a number of times to give United some much-needed width in the final third. Lucky the Video Assistant Review reprieved him for Olivier Giroud’s ‘goal’. 6

Nemanja Matic

Settled back into his old home effortlessly and provided a secure shield for the United back four. Disciplined throughout. 8

Fred

Continued his fruitful partnership with Matic and grew into the game when United started to keep the ball more. 7

Bruno Fernandes

Took a while to adjust to the tempo but showed glimpses of his class before he hit the post from a free-kick and crossed magnificently for Maguire. 8

Eric Bailly

Had a haphazard start but grew in confidence and executed some important challenges in both halves. Back to his best. 8

Daniel James

It felt like Solskjaer was protecting the Welshman by reverting to the split striker tactic and it did arrest the form of James. 5

Anthony Martial

Took too long to flicker into life but, when he did, he had the beating of Chelsea on the deck. And in the air. Fabulous header. 7

Subs

Andreas Pereira

Ran about. 6

Odion Ighalo
