How the world reacted to Messi’s 6th Ballon d’Or

It wasn’t a massive shock, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo not in attendance, but Lionel Messi picked up his sixth Ballon d’Or award from France Football on Monday evening.

Even if not a surprise, it’s still incredibly impressive. It’s Messi’s first Ballon d’Or since 2015 and at age 32, he’s looking as strong, quick, and incredible as ever. For a player on the wrong side of 30 to take his game back to a superstar level is incredible, and it had folks thinking nostalgic.

Here’s some of the reaction to Messi’s win on social media:

Meanwhile,  Cristiano Ronaldo was once again be absent for the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday evening, with the Portuguese star once again overlooked for the individual award, completing a year where he has emerged as the forgotten footballer of 2019.

Having been a regular Ballon d’Or winner during his time with Real Madrid, his transfer to Juventus has appeared to have a knock on his own individual brilliance, or at least it isn’t being as widely recognised in the same manner.

His former domestic teammate, Luka Modric, broke the Messi/Ronaldo duopoly of the Ballon d’Or in 2018 when he became the first player who wasn’t one of those two names to win it since Kaka in 2007.

Despite the fact they were former teammates, Ronaldo didn’t go to the ceremony once he heard that he wouldn’t take home the big prize. Whilst the results aren’t yet official, Ronaldo is unlikely to win the award, and the fact he isn’t at the ceremony virtually proves this as fact.

However, Ronaldo is determined to ensure that 2020 will be a different story, even though Juventus aren’t currently at the top of Serie A.

He has the chance to lead the Bianconeri to glory in the Champions League, whilst a good outing in Euro 2020 with Portugal will put him right back into contention for the individual trophy he desires the most, until then though, he is out in the wilderness.
