“I am not running in 2020”, Hillary Clinton says.
Hillary Clinton has for the first time ruled out running for president in 2020.
Hillary Clinton will not seek a rematch with Donald Trump. The popular-vote winner from 2016 told reporters , a Hudson Valley station in New York, that she is not a going to be a candidate in 2020: “I’m not running,” Clinton said — but quickly added: “I’m going to keep speaking out. I’m not going anywhere.”
“I want to be sure that people understand I’m going to keep speaking out,” she said. “I’m not going anywhere. What’s at stake in our country, the kind of things that are happening right now are deeply troubling to me. And I’m also thinking hard about how do we start talking and listening to each other again? We’ve just gotten so polarized. We’ve gotten into really opposing camps unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my adult life.”
Speculation about a Clinton 2020 bid had quieted in recent weeks after former campaign manager John Podesta said a run was not in the cards, and after top fundraisers and loyalists like Esprit co-founder Susie Tompkins Buell moved early to back the 2020 campaign of Sen. Kamala Harris.
She was the first woman to win a major party’s nomination for the presidency and as such will serve as a model and point of comparison for the multiple women in the current field. We’re already seeing the “likability” question that dogged Clinton pop up about other women candidates.
