— Arsenal make approach to sign Juventus star Medhi Benatia
Arsenal have approached Juventus over a move for Medhi Benatia, according to reports in Italy. Rob Holding was ruled out for the season with a serious knee injury last month and Unai Emery is open to signing a central defender in the January transfer window.
Benatia, 31, who was linked with Arsenal in the summer, has once again emerged as a target with the Moroccan’s future becoming increasingly uncertain in Turin. Leonardo Bonucci’s return has seen Benatia drop down the pecking order at Juve and, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Arsenal have enquired about his potential availability.
However, it’s claimed Massimiliano Allegri wants to keep hold of Benatia this winter and Arsenal will have to wait until the summer to do business with the Serie A giants. Schalke have also contacted Juventus about the former Bayern Munich centre-back.
Benatia hinted that he could be on the move this January when asked about his future before the window. ‘If [Juventus] need me in the Champions League, I will make myself ready, but I can hardly play a game every so often,’ Benatia told La Stampa.
‘Last year I did well because I had more continuity. Unfortunately, now I do not have it. ‘Part of my job is that I always have to work to make myself ready, but it is not a pleasant situation.’
