Today it was announced that two Christian bakers have won a Supreme Court battle that has ruled that they did not discriminate against a couple when they refused to make a cake with the words “Support Gay Marriage” on it.

Supreme Court ruled couple were not discriminating by refusing to bake ‘gay cake’ – and the internet had some thoughts

Daniel and Amy McArthur, who run Belfast-based Ashers Baking Company, won a long-running legal battle against Gareth Lee, who accused the pair of discrimination on sexual and political grounds after they refused to make the cake in 2014.

Lee originally won legal action in the ‘gay cake case’, and the couple were ordered to pay £500 in damages for refusing to make the Bert and Ernie-themed cake to mark the International Day Against Homophobia.

Announcing and explaining the verdict, president Lady Hale said:

It is deeply humiliating, and an affront to human dignity, to deny someone a service because of that person’s race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or any of the other protected personal characteristics, but that is not what happened in this case.

The court then added:

Nobody should be forced to have or express a political opinion in which he does not believe.

However, today the Supreme Court’s ruling was unanimously in favour of the couple. Speaking outside the court, Mr Lee said:

I think this has consequences for everyone. Anyone can walk into a shop – you shouldn’t have to work out if you’re going to be served based on their religious beliefs. I am confused.

I’m concerned, not just for the implications for myself or other gay people, but for everyone single one of us. Do we have to guess when we go into a shop whether we’re going to be served or not?
