What is Sansapote?

A large, unique looking fruit that develops over several months.  Good cultivars are very pleasantly sweet, reminding somewhat of pumpkin.  Since there are wild types with lesser quality, the fruit is hardly known and underrated.  The tree itself is very ornamental, with a beautiful crown structure.

Sansapote fruit is a large, spherical, berry, greenish-brown then yellow, with lenticels. When ripe, the  flesh smells like fresh pumpkin.  The sansapote fruit is held in rather low esteem, of the family Chrysobalanaceae. The fruit varies in size, with some specimens reported to be 20cm long and 14cm in diameter, is often called sonzapote in Costa Rica and El Salvador. Botanical name: Licania platypus
